Legend of the Origin of Mont Saint-Michel

According to legend, Mont Saint-Michel was founded in 708 after the archangel Michael appeared to Aubert, the bishop of Avranches, and commanded him to build a church on the rock then known as Mont Tombe. The archangel insisted three times, even going so far as to pierce the bishop's skull to prove his seriousness. In response to these divine visions, Aubert built the first sanctuary on this isolated site, thus marking the beginning of the transformation of Mont Tombe into Mont Saint-Michel. This place quickly became an important pilgrimage center and a major monastic complex, famous for its impressive architecture and spiritual significance.
